Birdies!

My sister thinks we live in a menagerie and keeps bringing home new additions every once in a while. >_<

The latest:

At first it was just the blue one, but we thought he was lonely so we got him a friend. I'm not too sure of their genders but I think the blue one is a boy and the yellow-ish one is a girl... or maybe not. Could be both boys or girls for all I know. Lar, I know nothing about birds. ^^;

They're really cute, but my little doggie haaaaaaaaates them. She spends every chance she gets to watch their every move. If I ever so much move the birdcage by even a centimeter, she bolts from wherever she is and charges towards the cage. When my sister takes the birdies away, she gets sad and doesn't want to eat (luckily she doesn't want to stay hungry for long). I don't get it.

I'm stumped for names. Thought about naming them "Romeo and Juliet" or "Hamlet and Ophelia" but nahhh, don't wanna name them after tragic lovers. For now, the blue one is "Flappy" and the other "Birdie". T_T

Idiot Neighbors

Current Mood: Aggravated

I can't sleep tonight. Because my freaking neighbors are blaring their freaking stereos full blast, amping up their freaking guitars and drums at freaking 12:42 am right now. I've already called 311 and reported a noise disturbance. I hope the police come soon....

But the thing is, this isn't just a one time occurance. It is like every other night. Once they started playing drums at 2am. The cops came, they stopped for a while, but then 10 minutes later started up again and wouldn't stop until nearly 4am!! I believe the cops came back a 2nd time too! Arrrrrgggghhhh!!!!

Even in the daytime it's just as bad. It's always music blaring from next door. Morning to night. Night to morning. Don't these people sleep?!

Is there anything else I could do to make them stop doing this? Since it's a constant problem, is there perchance some sort of legal action I could take?

Eventually I think I may just go insane if this continues on and on and on. *grits teeth*

Art dump

I can't seem to stop sneezing today. Ugh. But I'm not yet knee deep in tissue. Anyways...

New art. It's been sitting on my harddrive since November and I was so sick of seeing in the WIP folder so I decided to finish it. Took the whole weekend, blah.

Close up:

Old version from November:

Sketches and stuff (done a while ago, so they're not new...)

*Kaze Hikaru ch 94*

A couple days ago just as I was wishing that KH vol 19 would come out sooner, Nana emails me with scans to edit! Woot!!! Sometimes I wonder what I'd do without her. *huggles*

A couple more pages to edit, but some scenes to share in the meantime!

Here we have IY's Kohaku - no wait I mean Okita on the cover. And looking pretty kickass if you ask me. XP

For some weird reason, Okita has a strange tendency to lick people (with the victim usually being Sei)... But it's always amusing nonetheless. ^^

And the random shamisen player from v 18 appears! Only more drunk this time around.

Later Okita runs off and leaving poor Sei to go searching for him all over town. I swear, how many times has this happened? ^_^;

^__^

*waves flag* Yeessss, I'm still alive and kicking. I came down with the flu a second time after I caught the first 2 weeks ago (I know, I really should go see a doctor... >_>), and am slowly recovering. Getting my butt in gear, and one of the first things I decided to do was revamp my artsite with a new halloween-ish layout!

...

... I really gotta stop drawing Cat Boy so much. (But on the other hand, he's so fun to draw! ^^)

Next on the list is to get back to work on my webcomics. But bed calls right now! ^__^

Why aren't I in bed?

I feel very tired (a little due to the flu/cold/whatever it is), but am not as mentally exhausted as I was weeks ago. I think I'm getting back on track on things - very slowly though. My webcomic projects should resume soon, in another week or two as an estimate.

I've also finally started plotting my RSOM entry, and decided to go with a lighthearted comedy. My first choice was to do a slice of life story but after I plotted it, it looked like a horrible/predictable afterschool special. O_o Meh, so that's scrapped... although I still like it very much as I think the sol entry had a stronger message. Hopefully I can get the entry in by November... No more procrastinating! :)

Been working on and off on this thing for a little while.

Can't Concentrate

Once again, I'm having sleep problems and things are not looking very optimistic right now. I had thought everything would be settled by this Friday and I'd finally be at ease with my Uni classes... boy was I wrong. Even though I've experienced high stress during past semesters, but never has it gotten this bad or lasted this long. I couldn't take it anymore, so I marched myself to the Counciling Office today and made an appointment. I hope, I hope that I'll feel like myself soon and resolve the problem. Sigh.

As much as I hate to do this but I think I may have to put CB//MG and Fallen Moon on haitus for the time being. Just until I am absolutely rid of all this anxiety and stress. But who knows, maybe there'll be an update for the next week...

Insomia

The semester has barely started and I'm already wishing that it would just end. I don't know how I'll survive the next months when I'm not looking forward to any of my classes (oddly, right after I registered I couldn't wait for school to begin). The JPN class I was excited most about is turning out to be a real horror as I'm having a terrible time understanding the professor. Not because he has an accent but because he speaks way too fast for my brain to comprehend and it just comes off as gibberish to me. Sadly, I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. *sigh*

On a more positive note, Nana sent me raws of Kaze Hikaru ch 91 to edit. It's rather wierd but I found it really relaxing just cleaning up the scans. My stress eased off a bit as I worked (and do some practice reading heh). Ah, I'm beginning to love Saitou more and more (just love the way he antagonizes Okita!) :)

And hopefully I'll be getting back on track with CB//MG and Fallen Moon soon.

Felt like doing some real media, because doing art on the computer all the time is giving me headaches. Acrylics, Prismacolor pencils, watercolor, sakura pigma. Meh. Boring and uninspiring, but it was intended to be something quick. Sheesh, the last time I did anything like this was... more than 2 years ago. O_o

Pictures taken with a digital camera, hence the poor quality.

Oh yeah, my artsite's also moved to a new and spiffy webhost.

Been reading through a lot of tutorials, and was all pumped up to start painting (digitally of course). This is actually my second attempt... At first I was trying to paint a guy, but I couldn't get it right no matter what. Frustrated I gave up and started painting a girl instead. Again. It's the umpteenth time I've painted a girl. Next time... definately next time, it'll be a guy. >_>

Still a work in progress tho:

Nose, ears and shoulders are in dire need of repainting. But I don't know if I want to continue working on this. I'm out of my purple mood. XP

To do or not to do?

Just found out today that the 6th Tokypop Rising Stars Contest is starting (actually it's already started). This time I WILL DEFINATELY enter. Considering that the deadline is January 13th, 2006, there is no excuse that I can't do it due to lack of time. No more excuses, no more low-confidence and no more procrastination. I'm gonna do it! >_<

Now the problem is that I have two ideas for my submission and can't decide which one I want to enter. One is a dramatic slice-of-life story, the other is more familiar territory: a screwball fairytale-ish comedy. Meh, while I'm more inclined towards option #2, option #1 will force me to work in new territory and is something people could relate more to.

Hmmmmmmmm.....

Kaze Hikaru trans

You know, I've never fully appreciated the hard work that translators go under, until I tried it out myself. Boy is it difficult. *_*

Kaze Hikaru Chapter 78
Source credit: ACCVN.net
Trans by: Suika

Key:
* denotes a line that I'm not too sure of.
{} denotes my commentary

Just a translation of pages 82 until part of 90. I might do a whole translation, depending on whether or not people want it though. This is a really angsty chapter. But it was a great chapter nonetheless. :)

---------- Start --------

[82]

Matsumoto: You speak as if you’re really close to him.

Okita: Yes. I’ve never felt that he was a stranger.
For the past two years, we’ve always been together at each other’s side.
It’s come to the point where I now feel he is dearer to me than my own family.

Matsumoto: Okita…

[83]

Matsumoto: Could it be that you have a problem with “a man’s ability”?

Okita: Man’s…?
Arrow: Slow to understand.
HA?!
Why… Why in front of Kamiya-san even…
What sort of joke is this?*

Matsumoto: Don’t worry. He’s still unconscious. I am a physician, so have faith in me. It’s just a light fever, nothing to fret about.
I didn’t mean to tease you.

Okita: But, but…

Matsumoto: Alright, alright. Come out with me for a little bit.

[84]

Matsumoto: Isn’t that right!
Seeing your attitude, one can clearly see that you harbor special feelings toward him.
Furthermore, you know that Kamiya is Sei {and a girl}!
But you still dilly-dally.
Why there’s a girl right in front of you but you won’t do anything about it. I just can’t fathom why.

Okita: No thank you, I’m still on duty.

Okita: Ah…
(So this is what he wants to talk about)
But Kamiya-san really wants to become a samurai as well as…

Matsumoto: Stupid!
If you just spit it out, then everything will be different.
Even so, you’re at the right ages
And the two of you suit each other so well!

[85]

Okita: I don’t ever intend to start a family.
Nor fall in love.

My mind has been made up.

Matsumoto: That is why I’m asking why you’ve made such a decision!

Okita: Matsumoto-sensei.
I believe telling you would be okay,
But I beg you, even if something should happen please do not reveal this to anyone else. Especially to Kondou-sensei and Hijikata-san.
Could you do that?

[86]

Matsumoto: Just believe in me, I’m a man as well.

Okita: Thank you Sensei.

Okita: When I was 17, I swore never to marry.

Before I had thought
Being a practitioner of the martial arts, falling in love would just have an adverse effect on my concentration.

But the one reason why I won’t take a wife is…
One time, after I had refused a girl, right in front of my very eyes, she then took a knife and plunged it into her throat. {refer to volume 9, chapter 45}

[87]

Matsumoto: How terrible!

Okita: Luckily we were able to save her.
However I was petrified with fear.
And terrified beyond belief.

Not for anyone,
Not for anything,
But just one phrase was enough to make her forfeit her life.
Why in the world, is there a thing called “woman”?

It’s appallingly hard to understand.
Suddenly I felt disgusted
Even days afterwards I still felt nauseous.

The mentality I had acquired after years of training was now in disarray.*
No matter how many times I practiced with my sword, I could not get that girl out of my head.

I deeply resented that.*

[88]

Okita: Finally,
I realized
I had
Loved that girl very much.

Crying my eyes out and frequently vomiting, I’ve caused Kondou-sensei and Hijikata-san so much worry.
At that time, I had just seen my weakness sullying my very being.
As well as what they call the craziness of love.

Matsumoto: Because of this, you cannot give love a second chance?

Okita: I am a samurai.
To me, there are more important things than love, than women even.

[89]

Okita: And that is, to become the strongest swordsman
and lend my strength to Kondou-sensei.

To attain that goal
I readily exchange everything else.

Matsumoto: A samurai declaring such honorable words*
In a hundred years, there may not be any like him.*
This young man with such a spirit born into this era
Is it a boon or shortcoming?

But Okita.
Aren’t you a bit sad?

[90]

Okita: The less I think about it, the better it is for me.
Nevertheless, I’ve forgotten about it a long time ago.

---------- End --------

*sob* 16+ volumes and they're dancing around. Will Sei and Okita EVER get together?! Aaaaaarrrrgh, despite it, I still ♥ this manga like crazy. :P

I find it hilariously ironic that in the next volume Okita gets set up to a 見合い (miai - formal marriage interview). Actually, he spends most of the chapter running around town looking for Sei, and completely forgets about it (because the only thing on his mind was Sei, bwahaaha). In the end, he manages to get out of the 見合い (also courtesy of Sei *heh*).

Ah, volume 18 should be coming out soon... Can't wait to get it. ^_____^

Not all manga have stylized eyes!

Years ago when I read a review on “Hana no Koe” on S-Cafe, it piqued my interest greatly when the reviewer commented about Sumeragi Natsuki’s (皇なつき) art being “Chinese illustration meets manga kind of way”. And I thought to myself, “I’ve got to see this.”

But I didn’t get around to it until a recent trip to Kinokuniya and randomly brought a volume from that author. That said volume, 山に住む神, consisted of 5 short stories – ranging from 1992 to 2001 - with settings taking place in ancient Korea, China (Qing Dynasty), and medieval Europe. The stories were published under Asuka DX (same as Seimanden).

In the beginning it took me several rereadings to adjust to her style. Sumeragi’s style is so realistic and different from the predominant “big eyes, small mouth” (aka Ribon, Nakayoshi, Sho-comi) shoujo type that I am so used to. There are no sweatdrops, no SD characters - none of the usual manga conventions. In a way, it’s akin to Samura Hiroaki (author of Blade of the Immortal)’s style, but the lines are much more tighter and controlled.

Now, every single time I open the book and attempt to read, my eyes end up wandering. No matter how many times I try, I just end up staring at the gorgeous artwork. My god, how does she do those brushstrokes?!

Truly, Sumeragi is one hell of a gem. But unfortunately, my crappy scans are not going to do her justice.

Sample Scans:

Ho hum

Kinda disappointed with the new ch 2 cov I did for CB//MG. I had planned to do a lot more (wanted to paint a field of sunflowers, play around with textures), but because of lack of time I had to rush through things.

It's a bit different from my usual CGing style. This time I actually used the the smudge tool for shading. I might be using this technique again in the future. Hmm.

File ended up at 50+ layers, and 103 megs; mostly done with mouse (say 95%). It was such a huge pain saving the stupid file too. I really must learn to cut down on my layers. Or it will be the death of my computer. >_>

Should I be mad?

Someone's been posting up pages of my comic on their greatest journal, and a kind soul pointed this out to me in my guestbook (thank you so much!).

Neither one of them asked for permission, or even gave me credit. I'm surprised that I'm not boiling mad after finding out. Well, considering that the images don't work on that first link, and that my URL is scrawled all over the CG... it just makes me more annoyed than angry. Plus, this is nothing compared to the time when someone pretended to be me so he/she could sign up for a Xepher account. =_=

Will be writing a little note asking for removal to those peeps later. >_>

S i i i i i i i i g h .

Tsubasa Chronicle Episode 1

Finally watched Tsubasa Chronicle, and decided to make some screencaps for fun.

Warning! Image intensive because I'm too tired to bother with thumbnails. Originally I had 160+ screencaps, but downsized it to 25. That's still a lot though. If your connection can't handle it, you're better off not viewing them. ^_^;

You know, I'm beginning to think I'm cursed on Tuesdays. Tuesdays are usually the days when I finish up and upload the next page to Wirepop. But in these recent weeks, my internet connection died on me on Tues., I couldn't log in to Wirepop on Tues., and now I couldn't get to a scanner in time on Tues. *siiiiiiiiigh* If this continues I am going to wring out my hair.

Anyways, my Japanese oral test has come and gone. I whizzed through the first part easily. Unfortunately, I screwed up in the 2nd, and a towards the end of the 3rd (I had a brain malfunction *sob sob*). Then in the last part, guess I did pretty well with the Presentation (made it under 30 secs whew!) but got a little tongue tied with the dialouge reading. I practiced and studied! But my nervousness got the better of me and I screwed up. *wail*

Overall... it was just "eh". Now I gotta study for the written exam. Joy. =_=

And.

My Kaze Hikaru website is down AGAIN. What's up with polarhome and all these downtimes? At this rate I will either have to move the site to a new server, or make a mirror. If college and manga didn't suck up all my money, then I could buy myself a domain. 9_9;

Finished this hot off the press! A spring-ish CG of Sei from Kaze Hikaru:

It's been so long since I've done a realistic piece. The last few ones I've done turned out so cr@ppy that I felt like giving up on realism. I'm very proud of this though! Although it looks a little flat in some places.. but eh, it's due to my lazyness.

Now I want to do KH Okita (or maybe Sesshoumaru heh) next! But my guys always turn out looking like girly men. Argh. After all these years, I still can't draw males properly. O_o

New Layout

Updated my artsite with a new layout, bbs, and some stuff in projects section.

I usually always draw kimonos (esp Heian costume), so this time I decided to do something different and ended up drawing a "ge ge" (Manchurian Princess/noblewoman) instead. I should've looked at more reference pictures, because I goofed up on several parts... The scarf is not supposed to be like that! Only realized it when I was over halfway done. Nooooooo. >_<

I love this new layout lots, but the problem is that it's only compatible with 1040 x 768 screen size. That's not good...

updates, and updates

Updated my webcomic with 4 new pages. And then, if that wasn't enough, I went ahead and made a new wallpaper. I'll probably add another one, just because I'm in a wallpaper making mood. :)

Finally found out that タレ目 (tareme) means "drooping eyes."

*smacks herself on the head* Duh!

I knew it had something to do with eyes, because of the kanji 目, and because the character had funny looking eyes. ^^ Now how to translate タレ目のじいちゃん into english? "The Old Man with Drooping Eyes", "droopy-eyed gramps", or ...? 9_9;

The Conqueror’s Story

Recently started watching TVB’s The Conqueror’s Story (when I take short breaks from cging ^^). The story is about Liu Bang, and how the Han Dynasty came to be.

When I watched the themesong, I had thought it was going to be boring just like Blade Heart. To my pleasant surprise, TCS is very fast-placed with a solid cast and bits of humor here and there. Thankfully, TVB didn’t go cheap and we also get to see some beautiful scenery, lovely costumes and war scenes where there aren’t just 20 or so extras. XP

So far, I am liking Wayne Lai as Han Xin the best, and cannot wait to see how he rises into power! :D Least likable character is Cerina de Graca as the 2nd concubine... It may be because her inadequate acting. Wished they had chosen someone else.

Though not completely historically correct (only about 85% I heard?), it’s still highly enjoyable. Overall, I think this may be one of the best series to come out of TVB in 2004 (I was going to say this year, but realized that it’s now 2005 ^^;;) So much better than Twin of Brothers, which I stopped at the 10th or 11th tape because I finally realized that it was a pointless series. Should have never bothered watching it in the first place. Blargh! >_>

Can’t go on…

I’ve been working on this CG for my webcomic for this whole week now, and I’m still not finished. What sucks is that my right hand hurts badly now, due to working on this for many hours each day.

So close to being finished and yet still so far… Arrrrrgh.

And yes, I purposely did not screencap the whole thing. Har har har.

Movie Review: Gohatto/Taboo

Title: Gohatto (aka Taboo)
Genre: Samurai Drama
Directer: Nagisa Oshima
Cast: Takeshi Kitano, Ryuhei Matsuda, Tadanobu Asano, Shinji Takeda

Premise: When a beautiful boy joins the Shinsengumi, members within the group soon become attracted to him, and begin vying for his affections. Jealousy among men can be a dangerous thing, as murders soon start occurring...

My Thoughts: I had wanted to watch this movie for quite some time now. After having such a difficult time getting my hands on the DVD, I was going to be rather angry if the movie turned out to be a major disappointment. On the other hand, I knew I wasn’t going to like it because of the mixed reviews and due to the fact that it deals with homosexuality among samurai (or more specifically within the Shinsengumi). However, I really, really wanted to see Shinji Takeda’s portrayal of Okita, and so curiosity won out.

After watching this film, I can safely say that the homosexuality theme did not bother me as much as I initially anticipated. What really got me were the actors!

A lot of the reviews I read kept praising Kitano "Beat" Takeshi and his wonderful performance as Hijikata. I concur. I thought he was terribly miscast, and it was a pain watching and listening to him. Often times it sounded like he was just reciting out of the damn script.

I don’t think Ryuhei Matsuda as Sozaburou (aka the one whom everyone wants to sleep with O_o) is very pretty or attractive at all. Sure, he looks like a woman. Yet, if he really was a woman, I still wouldn’t think him as beautiful. His acting is nothing amazing either. Stiff as a doll, with a bored facial expression much of the time.

Takeda Shinji was alright as Okita. He seemed rather arrogant, especially when he laughed... Nonetheless, he was the only thing that kept me interested. If it weren’t for Okita, I don’t think I would’ve made it to the end. =_=

I’ve re-watched bits of it about 3 times now, and I still cannot understand how and why Sozaburou fell in love with Okita. It felt like they pulled that out of thin air. We know half of the Shinsengumi loves Sozaburou, but who does Sozaburou love? Oh, it’s Okita. Huh? How did that happen? They barely interacted, and were in what, 2-3 scenes together?! Did I miss something?

I have mixed feelings about this film. Yes, it is a beautiful film (I especially love the lighting), with a nice soundtrack. But, it didn’t really enlighten me on the subject matter. I ended up being more confused than anything.

I give this movie: 3 stars

Blasted Flu

Was in the mood to do something uber cute, this was just a quick CG. Click on link to see whole image. You know, those eyes look kinda freaky to me... Also, the next episode for CB//MG is not going well. I just can't seem to get into the right mood to draw. What's even more frustrating is that I've spend most of my Thanksgiving vacation sleeping off the flu!!! >_<

Anyways, I’ve finally gotten a copy of Kaze Hikaru 11 and 12! It’s been driving me nuts having that gap between 10 and 13 in my collection. However, I’m not completely happy, because I wanted volume 16 as well, alas Kinokuniya didn’t have it yet. Grrrrrr~~~~~~

Favorite Scenes:

Okita gobbling the dango that Sei was holding... XD

Saitou unexpectedly giving Sei a hug, which a shocked Okita happens to see

Okita encountering a sleeping Sei, and putting a blanket over her to keep her warm (awww)

Okita “hitting on” Saitou... too hilarious... ^^;;

Yamanami falling ill, Kondou overeacts

Saitou thinking about “Kamiya no shiroi ashi” lol!

Okita and Harada talking about Sai (I think... need to translate it), and he suddenly thinks of Sei...

Okita giving Sei a lecture and nearly spills her secret

Okita: “Anata wa o-”
Sei (quizzical look): “O?"
Okita (flushed face): "O..." and then goes off rambling about something else
Me: Baka! You were going to say "onago", weren't you!

Best scenes:

Akesato jumping down from the balcony...

The fight scene w/ Okita slashing the two punks in midair...

If anything, these two volumes were very bittersweet and left me with a melancholy feeling that I just can’t shake off...

Girl Got Game
Yet another story revolving around a girl who has to masquerade as a boy... but luckily, I am a sucker for cross-dressing stories. I had no expectations for it and didn’t really know what it was about. Hehe, didn’t bother to read the summary – as always ^^;; I was pleasantly surprised with GGG, even though I’m not into sports manga. The art style reminds me of something I’d read in Ribon or Nakayoshi. Cute, a little humorous and good for light reading, but otherwise it’s just another typical shoujo manga.

If there’s anything I have to complain about, it’s gotta be that atrocious cover. What was Tokyopop thinking? Are they trying to blind me? I can’t even look at the cover for 2 seconds before getting a headache. And I don't need anymore headaches, thank you very much. =_=

Things to Watch

As much as I love manga and anime, too much of it is bad. Henceforth I must watch dramas to balance things out! :O

Currently up to episode 14 of Shinsengumi. I think the story has become a bit dull... or maybe it's because things have gotten too serious (for me)? Geez, but it took them forever to get out of Edo. Hopefully things will pick up again. Can't wait for the Ikedaya Affair, which is about 10 or so episodes away... Argh. And when will Hijikata become the "Onifukuchou"? I'm tired of seeing Hijikata the womanizer. =_=

Also finished watching To Catch the Uncatchable... now I need something else to watch.

Choice #1: Twin of Brothers
This one looks really heavy on the special effects, and I'm not too fond of the male or female leads. The scenery looks gorgeous though.

Choice #2: War and Beauty
Ah, another one of those imperial concubine stories (a la la Legend of Lady Yang). I just know that there'll be lots of jealousy, backstabbing and deaths in this one. Wheee.
However, Maggie Cheung and Bowie Lam star in it, so it might be worthwhile. Unfortunately, I cannot stand Charmaine and have attempted to avoid watching any series with her. Hmph. Maybe she won't be an eyesore in this one. Or maybe I should just learn to tolerate her... >_
